The Role
As a Senior Model Development Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in advancing SPEN’s system modelling and analysis capabilities. You will develop and maintain cutting-edge tools, models and software that empower our 132 kV and EHV system design and connection engineers to assess various network studies and innovation solutions efficiently and accurately.
You will ensure our 132 kV and EHV network models are up to date, reflecting the latest as-is and authorised network positions, including all live connection offers and reinforcements schemes. Additionally, you will manage SPEN’s power system analysis applications and modelling tools to ensure their full functionality.
This role also involves contributing to core business-as-usual (BAU) system planning outputs, fulfilling license requirements, Grid Code and Ofgem obligations.
Key Responsibilities
Provide high-quality, accurate and up-to-date system models for the 33 kV and 132 kV networks to enable timely and precise design studies and quotes.
Maintain and support SPEN’s power system analysis tools, scripts and automated processes across platforms like IPSA+, DIgSILENT, PI/SCADA, and others.
Perform analysis and preparation of SPENs annual Line Loss Factor calculations and Elexon Audits.
Conduct FCP analysis for EHV distribution charge calculations.
Offer technical guidance and support senior management, peers and other operational units in your area of expertise.
Engage with customers and stakeholders to communicate network technical and security requirements effectively, ensuring SPEN’s position is understood and supported.
Support BAU activities such as Week24/42/50 reporting, data exchange with adjacent DNOs, LTDS production and participation in industry workgroups.
What you’ll bring
Proven experience in the GB power system, power system analysis software (IPSA+, DIgSILENT), and coding solutions (e.g. Python, VBA, SQL etc).
Strong written, verbal and technical communication skills, with excellent attention to detail.
Ability to manage diverse, high-pressure workloads effectively.
Expertise in delivering complex computationally projects to a high standard within tight timeframes.
Innovative problem-solving skills and the ability to devise practical solutions to complex challenges.
Exceptional influencing and communication skills to convey technical concepts to varied audiences.
Minimum Requirement
Degree in Electrical Engineer, Computer Science, Data Science or relevant experience
Proficiency in power system modelling, assessment and design, particularly using IPSA+ and DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
Strong software development skill for automating power systems assessments (e.g. Python, GUI development, database handling)
Excellent IT literacy, including Microsoft Office and engineering software.
