MSN Weather, part of Microsoft AI, has been leading the weather forecast industry with #1 accuracy for two consecutive years according to ForecastWatch benchmark. We provide full variable spectrum forecasts (temperature, precipitation, humidity, pressure, wind, air quality and more) to 100 Million daily active users, through our first party products and third party partnerships.

 

We are seeking an Applied Scientist II with a background in Machine Learning and a passion for solving complex, real-world problems. As part of our Microsoft Weather AI Forecast Science Team, you will contribute to the development of cutting-edge weather forecasting technologies that impact over 1 billion users worldwide. This role involves research and development in forecast models, including deep learning, transformers, GANs, diffusion models, CNNs, foundation models, and ensemble forecasts. You will leverage our strengths in user data, observation data and sensing data to enhance forecasting capabilities and drive innovation in weather science, all while growing your expertise in applied machine learning.

Responsibilities

  • Research state-of-the-art (SOTA) publications and evaluate open-source models to identify and implement innovative, scalable solutions for product challenges.
  • Collaborate with product and business groups to align research and technology contributions with product goals.
  • Understand, maintain, and improve existing models.
  • Build foundational knowledge in relevant domains, staying updated on industry trends, tools, and methods to enhance efficiency and innovation.
  • Assist in transitioning new technologies into production to address immediate product needs and drive measurable impact.
  • Review business and product requirements, applying existing research and proven solutions to meet objectives effectively.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ year(s) research experience creating Machine Learning or Deep Learning themed paper publications (e.g., peer-reviewed academic papers) in major AI or Meteology conferences or Journals (AAAI, NeurIPS, ICML, ICCV, ECCV, AMS, AGU, EGU, Nature, Science etc.).
  • 2+ year(s) hands-on experience working on data and deep learning models using Python and major deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, Tensorflow etc).

 

Applied Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $83,600 - CAD $159,600 per year.
