Overview:
Pembina Pipeline Corporation is recruiting for an Intern to join the Safety Department team in Calgary, for a 12–16-month term, starting in May 2025. This position reports to the Director, Process Safety in the Safety Service Unit. This position will support the Safety Department in a variety of ongoing activities and initiatives to enable the meeting of department and program objectives and will also support other Safety activities as required.
Promoting Pembina’s Safety Culture – Zero by Choice, the Safety Team is dedicated to delivering quality products and services by leading the enterprise-wide occupational health and safety, process safety, physical security, and emergency management programs, insurance program and Operations Management System governance. The Safety team ensures compliance with all company, federal and local government health, safety, security and emergency management regulations and requirements ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for our employees, contractors, and communities.
Responsibilities may include but not limited to:
- Assist in data collection and trending for Safety events that require detailed analysis as well as potential PSM KPIs;
- Support Safety Business Intelligence and Analytics Maturity Model;
- Identify Safety incident database entries that relate directly to Process Safety and update classification accordingly;
- Work with engineering and operations groups to estimate the quantity released to determine the appropriate classifications for Process Safety Events;
- Support ongoing PHAs (Process Hazard Analysis) including noding of Process and Instrumentation diagram (P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagram) and reporting;
- Manage/sustain 10-year Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) schedule for Pembina;
- Assist with BU Support of PHA Actions and Risks;
- Participate in PHA by recording and documenting findings;
- Support Identification of Safety Critical Devices using PHA data and other sources;
- Provide Process Safety engineering support to sites in areas such as facility siting, relief rate calculations etc.;
- Provide support to the Process Safety program and other stakeholders on programs and projects;
- Assist in the development of technical standards, practices, and procedures;
- Plan, execute, and oversee the closure of MOCs, ensuring clear communication and comprehensive reporting throughout the process;
- Aid in conducting the annual MOC audits;
- Assist business units by coordinating the management and reassignment of essential Process Safety System tasks, ensuring continuity and compliance in the face of personnel changes;
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to facilitate enhancements and improvements in process safety systems by engaging in requirements gathering, assisting in the creation of project timelines and budgeting approvals, and conducting user acceptance testing;
- Provide essential support to the business in acquisitions by aiding the Safety team with the coordination of various deliverables and adherence to project timelines;
- Support the Management of Incident Learnings and Bulletin Libraries, including the Safety SharePoint site;
- Identify continuous improvement activities to reduce manual work using AI (co-pilot, Pembina GPT), Power Apps, Robotic Process Automation (RPA);
- Support administration t for fleet safety programs; and
- Contribute to an environment that promotes inclusion and diversity.
Qualifications:
- Must be enrolled in a post-secondary Enginering program, with 3rd year completed;
- Chemical Engineering student preferred; Mechanical Engineering acceptable;
- Demonstrated time management, attention to detail, and meticulous analysis is required;
- Strong analytical mindset – preference given to experience in data, analytics and/or using AI tools;
- Able to travel to the field for multiple day trips;
- Strong communication skills are essential with a continuous improvement mindset; and
- Willingness to commit to a 12–16-month fixed term contract.
The successful candidate must be legally able to work in the country of the position. Final candidate will be required to undergo Pre-Employment Background Checks including a Criminal Record Check.
