The Artificial Intelligence Technology (AIT) Group develops fundamental, cross-cutting and enabling AI technologies to solve complex challenges and advance AI for the nation. In close collaboration with groups across the Lab and with the academic community, especially MIT, our research team is working at the frontier in AI research with application to both traditional Laboratory technology areas and missions, as well as emerging areas of AI such as materials science and biotechnology. The group is also chartered with building trustworthy AI to enable complex decision-making and human-ai teaming, and educating the workforce of the future to speed-up the adoption of AI in key national security domains.

 

Our research team includes many of the Laboratory’s top AI experts from across lab mission areas with expertise in deep learning architectures, adversarial learning, probabilistic programming, reinforcement learning, network science, multi-modal data fusion, human ai-teaming and autonomous systems. Our team has access to large amounts of data and the largest AI supercomputer at any university in the world. The data and the compute capabilities provide ample opportunities to do research at scale on both closed and publicly available datasets. We provide a vibrant collaborative research environment with close ties to academia and sponsors with critical mission needs.

Job Description

The specific summer assignment could include research on deep learning architectures, generative AI, agentic AI, multi-modal AI, AI-enabled autonomy, reinforcement learning, Human-Machine teaming, adversarial machine learning, graph analytics, time-series analytics, or Distributed/High performance computing.

 

This summer opportunity is open to graduate-level candidates, including those in the process of earning a BS, MS, or Ph.D. degree in a technical field with a focus on Artificial Intelligence such as Computer Science, Engineering, Science, Mathematics, or a related field.  Candidates should have exposure to a variety of techniques, including machine learning methods and various types of research methods. Specific coursework or experience with computer vision, human-ai interaction, natural language processing, deep learning or graph algorithms is desired, as is knowledge of Python programming and familiarity with PyTorch, LLMs, OpenAI Gym, or other AI development libraries.

 

Each selected intern will be mentored by a staff member and placed in a team to conduct research and development in one of the above and other related areas. Summer interns will participate fully in our group’s activities, which include many educational opportunities.

Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.
