Giant Leap Trainee

Are you ready to take a Giant Leap? We’re looking for a Machine Learning student for our Giant Leap program – a project-based internship in our Boulder/Louisville office. During the project you will be refining models for classifying and predicting sensor, station, & network exception states. As a Giant Leaper, you will get your own project to lead for three months, starting at the end of May.

Vaisala is a global leader in measurement instruments and intelligence helping industries, nations, people, and the planet to thrive. From predicting hurricanes to optimizing renewable energy production, our technology is used where it matters the most – from data centers, windfarms and laboratories to airports, the Arctic and even the surface of Mars. Our team of over 2,300 experts and 59 nationalities around the world is committed to taking every measure for the planet. Driven by our shared purpose, curiosity, and pioneering spirit, we stay ahead and make a difference. At Vaisala, you don't have to fit in to belong.

Giant Leap is a unique opportunity for you to be the project manager of your own project, with the support of your teammates and project supervisor. Every year, these projects are carefully selected by our leadership teams, meaning that you get to work on real-life questions that are important for us as a company.

We invest in your growth with training sessions throughout the summer. Along with lessons from your own field and work life in general, you have a chance to learn, for instance, presentation skills, project management and problem solving. Connections built with fellow Giant Leapers, Vaisala’s brilliant experts and our leadership form an invaluable network for your career. Many of our former Giant Leapers have also gone on to build impressive careers at Vaisala after the program.

What will your summer look like?

During the summer, we aim to develop a predictive classifier that determines the likely outcome of weather sensor & station exceptions: whether a sensor will self-recover, require remote troubleshooting, or a field service dispatch. By leveraging a comprehensive data lake that aggregates years of historical sensor information and weather condition reports, as well as field service records, you will develop strategies to not only classify & forecast the exceptions before they occur. The goal is to provide the global network operations team with a proactive tool that offers early warnings enabling timely interventions, thereby minimizing observation disruptions.

You will be part of the Data Operations Development team and will report to the data operations devops manager. You will have the chance to work alongside a brilliant team of professionals, you will make a real impact on the world by improving the accuracy of Vaisala’s models of the global now.

During the summer, you can help us refine insights into sensor network behavior, observation aggregation, & cybernetic feedback. You will join the team in our Louisville, Colorado office location for a hybrid work schedule.

What kind of skillset are we looking for?

  • Background in Machine Learning, Data Science, or a Related Field: Strong foundation in predictive modeling, feature engineering, and data analytics.
  • Programming Proficiency: Expertise in Python and relevant libraries (Pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn), with experience in building and deploying machine learning models.

Additional skills include:

  • Knowledge of Microservices and APIs: Familiarity with frameworks like Flask or FastAPI to develop accessible interfaces or services.
  • Analytical and Innovative Mindset: Ability to analyze complex data, identify patterns, and develop creative solutions for forecasting challenges.
  • Excellent Communication Skills: Capable of effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting findings to stakeholders.
  • Eagerness to Learn and Adapt: Open to exploring new technologies and methodologies to enhance the project's outcomes.
