In order to support the Gust Loads & Aeroelastics department, Airbus Operations is looking for a
Master student (d/f/m) in the field of Aerodynamics in the Gust Loads & Aeroelastics departmentYou are looking for a master thesis and want to get to know the work of a job title? Then apply now! We look forward to you supporting us in the Gust Loads & Aeroelastics department as a master student (d/f/m)!
Location: Hamburg
Start: 01.05.2025
Duration: 6 months
Your opportunity
Are you passionate about aircraft physics?
Are you keen to master the way we compute external loads acting on the vehicle due to maneuvers, flight in turbulence, landing impact, ground-handling?
Do you like to work in an empowered manner?
Do you enjoy connecting people and collaborating with many different interfaces?
This job will give you the opportunity to work internationally with several internal flight physics departments and with teams located in Europe and India.
About us
We are a team of 16 multicultural and passionate engineers who perform the gust calculations for overall aircraft design for all aircraft types. Our team is involved from a very early design stage until certification and also in-service support. We are responsible for running build model activities such as finite element modeling, creating mass and aerodynamics models. We perform gust loads calculation, including failure cases, and deliver to internal interfaces. On top, we are deeply involved in research and technology aspects with new aircraft configuration assessments, model based system engineering, automation and machine learning.
Introduction
The current industry approaches of modeling unsteady aerodynamic flow for the prediction of gust loads typically assume linear flow conditions. Linearity greatly reduces the computational time required to evaluate all the flight points and gust conditions required by the certification specifications (CS-25). At the same time, disregarding non-linearities such as boundary layer separation arising from the high angles of attack induced by strong gusts can lead to an over-estimation of loads and thus to an increased structural weight of the aircraft.
Your location
You will be working at the largest production site for civil aircraft situated in Hamburg. Its location on the southern banks of the river Elbe includes the option to commute by ferry. Experience the special flair of Hamburg in your spare time where vibrant cosmopolitan culture meets nautic legacy.
Your benefits
Work-life balance with a 35-hour week (flexitime).
International environment with the opportunity to network globally.
Work with modern/diversified technologies.
At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.
Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.
Your tasks and responsibilities
During this six months Master thesis you will develop and evaluate an unsteady aerodynamic model that includes the effect of flow separation in a piecewise linear approach. The model will be built using linearized computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of a complete flexible aircraft and adapted using aerodynamic data obtained in the non-linear flow region at high angles of attack. You will evaluate the model by comparison against higher-fidelity models, such as obtained from non-linear time domain simulation, with respect to gust loads.
You will contribute to:
Optimize the design of Airbus commercial aircraft in the frame of new wing technologies
the development of new approaches to model unsteady aerodynamics considering non-linearities for gust loads and flutter computation
Actively support us as a new member of our team on our journey
Desired skills and qualifications
You are a fulltime enrolled master student (d/f/m) within Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
You have good knowledge in aerodynamics, CFD and potential flows
Ideally you already have first experience in CFD using TAU or CODA
You have knowledge in coding using Python and/or Matlab
You bring basic knowledge in overall aircraft design and basic competencies in flight loads calculation and flight mechanics
You are passionate to understand physical aspects and to use your engineering judgement
If you are familiar with tools like MSC.NASTRAN or ALTAIR HyperWorks, this is beneficial
You are a highly motivated, proactive and open-minded person with a great sense of initiative
You are keen to deepen your technical knowledge while enjoying to work in a multicultural team
Your English is at negotiating level
