The Digital Power Laboratory within Huawei’s Zurich Research Center is responsible for advanced technology research, algorithms development, architecture evolution design, as well as strategic technology planning. The laboratory plays an important role in Huawei’s Digital Power business, specifically focusing on the design and development of technology and control systems for solar PV, battery energy storage, data centers, and embedded power supply.
To expand our Digital Power Lab in Zurich, we are looking for two:
Energy Storage Algorithms Engineers
As an Energy Storage Algorithms Engineer, you will combine knowledge of battery energy storage systems and electricity market dynamics, with statistical knowledge, experience in optimization and control algorithms, as well as coding experience.
Our team strive to develop novel methods, algorithms, and software to improve the economic profitability of battery energy storage systems, ensure their deployment within the European energy sector, and finally contribute to build a fully-renewable European energy system. You will work broadly with different energy stakeholders within and outside Huawei and drive innovation of our energy storage team.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop statistical and predictive models for energy-related quantities, such as electricity prices and solar PV generation.
- Design computational and statistical models of battery energy storage technologies aimed at understanding and forecasting operational performance, technology degradation, and other key performance indicators.
- Develop stochastic optimization and control algorithms to simulate the participation of battery energy storage systems in multiple European energy markets.
- Engage with external stakeholders in the energy sector and contribute to building tools and platforms for pilot projects.
- Identify and communicate challenges and opportunities that the team should consider within the context of European electricity markets.
Requirements & qualifications:
- PhD or MSc in quantitative disciplines, such as engineering, computer science, mathematics, or similar.
- Strong foundation in quantitative modeling and algorithm development, specifically within the domains of mathematical optimization, control theory, or machine learning.
- Solid knowledge of European electricity markets. Practical experience in energy trading, either through industry internship or during PhD work, is a plus.
- Knowledge of battery energy storage systems and their application scenarios.
- Proficiency in programming, for example in Python, Julia, Matlab, R, as well as in mainstream frameworks such as TensorFlow, scikit-learn, and similar.
- Ability to read academic papers, write patents, and communicate with external experts, along with experience in community development and maintenance.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, team-work spirit, and cross-domain leadership.
- Fluent in both written and spoken English.
