The Senior Data Engineer will utilise their experience and strong technical skills in data engineering to drive innovation and provide technical direction input to Architect/Delivery Lead/Product Owner.
They work hands on in the end-to-end life cycle of our data platforms, pipelines and solutions utilising modern data and cloud tooling, from contributing to design activities within projects, focusing on data and analytics solutions, as well as the ongoing maintenance and continuous improvement of them
What you will do:
- Collaborate closely with Data Modellers, Technical Business Analysts, Delivery Leads, Product Owners and Visualization Engineers to understand analytical requirements and translate them into scalable and cost-efficient data solutions on cloud platforms
- Design and implementation of data solutions and pipelines on existing enterprise platforms with data quality checks and monitoring procedures built in to guarantee the accuracy, consistency, and reliability
- Provide support and technical leadership in problem, issue, and incident resolutions of data platforms and pipelines, ensuring minimal disruption to data services
- Conduct peer reviews of code within the Data Engineering practice to maintain high standards of code quality and performance.
- Actively contribute to the Data Engineering/Software Engineering Chapter, aiding in the development of the chapter, adherence to enterprise standards.
- Develop and maintain detailed and precise technical documentation for all data engineering solutions and processes.
- Develop and fine-tune data models and schemas to support diverse analytical and reporting needs.
- Provide guidance and implement best practices for data extraction, loading, storage, indexing, retrieval, and transformation to ensure optimal performance and scalability.
- Guide and consult business stakeholders that look to make use of our Data Assets whilst safeguarding security, privacy and compliance policies
What you will bring:
- 5+ years relevant data engineering experience
- Tertiary degree (or equivalent experience) in a highly analytical discipline (e.g. computer science, engineering).
- Expert-level proficiency in Python and SQL, along with practical experience building and maintaining production-ready data pipelines using tools such as dbt, Airflow, Spark, Kafka, or DataStage. Experience with cloud-based and on-premise data warehousing solutions (e.g., Teradata, Snowflake, Redshift).
- Deep understanding of data engineering concepts and principles, including ETL/ELT processes, data warehousing, data modelling, and data governance.
- Hands-on pipeline development and deployment experience for new data use cases
- Solid understanding of data quality, security, and compliance standards.
- Familiarity with data visualisation tools such as Power BI.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and their data storage and processing services.
- Proficiency in DevOps practices and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
- Strong product mindset to build data products, focusing on customer needs, continuous value delivery, and operational excellence
- Agile mindset with experience working in an agile team, with a flexible working style either working independently or part of cross functional teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate highly technical information to non-technical stakeholders
- Excellent analytical skills and ability to learn with minimal oversight, critical thinking skills with an analytical mindset
- Intellectual curiosity and the ability to understand and solve not always well- defined problems and come up with relevant answers to guide our business decisions
- Experience in mentoring and leading engineers with technical direction.
- Strong teamwork, adaptability, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Proven ability to navigate ambiguity and demonstrate resilience.
