This position will play a key role in the continuous development and improvement of Venerable’s investment data environment. This includes ongoing investment data operations and development support for the maintenance of a centralized repository for asset-related data which acts as a single source of the truth to serve a variety of stakeholders across the organization. The role will involve data integrity, data integration, data transformation, data reconciliation, data governance, automation, as well as investment and risk analytics reporting. The position resides within the Investment and Risk Operations team within Venerable’s Risk department.

Primary Responsibilities:

- Ensure the integrity and completeness of investment data including risk metrics and analytics through the following:

  • Design and implement analysis tools to reconcile data obtained from multiple sources, and enable periodic/ad hoc data validations and tests of reasonability and consistency to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
  • Oversee and monitor data flows to ensure timely receipt of investment data and delivery of production reports from third party sources/vendors, and work closely with internal and external partners to address any issues that might arise.
  • Research and analyze data exceptions, working closely with internal and external partners to resolve issues.
  • Analyze trends and patterns in observed data exceptions and outliers to improve upon the design and effectiveness of existing processes, and recommend and implement additional control processes as appropriate.
  • Foster the evolution of investment data integrity processes and ensure their scalability as Venerable’s business grows.

- Support investment data management efforts, including maintaining and enhancing information stored in internal databases, participating in projects to capture and validate investment data, and supporting integration with downstream processes.

- Provide support to investment data governance initiatives through the following:

  • Create, maintain, and review documentation related to investment data workflows and procedures.
  • Maintain data definitions and dictionaries to ensure consistency of investment data utilized by Investment Management as well as downstream users.
  • Create new and modify existing controls and procedures to mitigate risk and increase transparency.

- Build, maintain, and produce necessary investment-related dashboards and reports needed for internal analysis and downstream financial models and related processes.

- Develop/serve as a subject matter expert in investment data management, providing support for ongoing data operations as well as our investment data strategic initiatives. Provide guidance and technical coaching to other team members as necessary.

- Partner with internal stakeholders (including but not limited to: Investment Operations, Investment Management, Investment Accounting, Audit, Enterprise Risk Management, Hedging, Treasury, Valuation, and Technology) and external partners (e.g., risk analytics platform, investment accounting provider) to support investment-related data activities as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The candidate must possess the following:

  • An undergraduate degree, preferably in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Science, or other related fields. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the financial services industry, inclusive of experience working with investment data.
  • Experience working directly with one or more analytics, financial, and investment accounting platforms such as Blackrock Aladdin, Clearwater, Bloomberg, Factset.
  • Solid understanding of financial markets and instruments, including security reference data and attributes. Familiarity with fixed income reference data and risk analytics strongly preferred.
  • Advanced skills using the Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with the following is a plus: working with large data sets and databases, a basic command of one or more programming languages (e.g. SQL, Python, R, VBA), Amazon Web Services, familiarity with data visualization tools such as Power BI.
  • Detail-oriented, with strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, proactively identify potential issues and propose viable solutions, as well as the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.

The following are preferred:

  • Familiarity designing efficient business processes and related tools to optimize workflows, reduce manual effort, and mitigate potential errors.
  • Experience working with data transmission and loading, data reconciliation, risk production and reporting, and downstream integration.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively across Venerable, as well as with external investment partners and vendors.   
  • CFA, or progress towards is a plus.
  • Experience with Agile practices is a plus.
