RTX Corporation is an Aerospace and Defense company that provides advanced systems and services for commercial, military and government customers worldwide. It comprises three industry-leading businesses – Collins Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney, and Raytheon. Its 185,000 employees enable the company to operate at the edge of known science as they imagine and deliver solutions that push the boundaries in quantum physics, electric propulsion, directed energy, hypersonics, avionics and cybersecurity. The company, formed in 2020 through the combination of Raytheon Company and the United Technologies Corporation aerospace businesses, is headquartered in Arlington, VA.

To realize our full potential, RTX is committed to creating a company where all employees are respected, valued and supported in the pursuit of their goals. We know companies that embrace diversity in all its forms not only deliver stronger business results, but also become a force for good, fueling stronger business performance and greater opportunity for employees, partners, investors and communities to succeed.

The following position is to join our BBN team:
RTX BBN is one of RTX’s premier research and development centers. Our diverse research portfolio combines the best technologies to deliver innovative, custom solutions with real-world benefit. We are seeking a new or recently graduated MS with FPGA development experience to join the Physical Sciences & Systems and Quantum, Photonics, and Computing groups in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Quantum, Photonics, and Computing group is an established leader in quantum information science. With over two decades of research spanning quantum communication, sensing, photonics, and computing, we are constantly exploring new quantum and classical technologies to push the boundaries of what is possible. The Applied Physics group specializes in developing next-generation sensor system technologies by combining a fundamental understanding of the underlying physics, including complex signal interactions and propagation phenomenology, with a deep expertise in analysis, statistical signal processing, optimization, and machine learning.

What will you do
The candidate will join a world-class team that works with a broad range of Government agencies to solve problems that are both technically challenging and have a real-world impact. The candidate will support state-of-the-art experimental testbeds for quantum information systems, integrated photonic systems, real-time sensor processing systems, and other physical sciences pursuits. The ideal candidate will have good knowledge in digital systems, HDL, signal processing, hands-on experience with development of real-time embedded systems, and willingness to support limited off-site testing. Knowledge of high-speed interfaces and experience developing in multiple programming domains, including RTL, VHDL, Verilog, and scripting languages is a plus.

Examples of the innovative contributions that you will provide include:

• Developing control systems and architectures to affect performance of physical systems

• Developing control hardware for interfacing with quantum bits, quantum networks, and quantum sensors.

• Developing sophisticated detection and classification algorithms against state-of-the-art threats

• Developing novel proof-of-concept systems and evaluating them on military platforms

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or related discipline; or MS and minimum 3 years of experience; or BS and minimum 5 years of experience.
  • U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
  • Professional experience in FPGA development processes: RTL design, verification, timing analysis, lab bring up and validation
  • Understanding of DSP fundamentals and their implementation on FPGAs
  • Understanding of computing and processor architectures
  • Software development experience in C/C++, Python
  • Scripting development experience (bash, Tcl, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with SoC boards running bare metal code as well as configuring and deploying embedded Linux (e.g. Petalinux)
  • Experience with RFSoC boards and/or high-speed analog signal generation and digitization
  • Experience with high-speed interfaces, including experience in Ethernet, serial point to point communication (sFPDP, SPI), and high-speed memory interfaces (HBM2, DDR)
  • Familiarity with building Linux drivers for FPGA peripherals
  • Experience with high level synthesis tools, including BlueSpec System Verilog
  • Experience working with domain experts to define requirements and design systems to be used in experimental or operational environments
  • Strong technical writing and communication
