The YouVersion Staff Data Engineer will lead the development of scalable data infrastructure and processes to support the Bible App’s global growth. This role focuses on defining best practices, setting technical standards, delivering excellent solutions and mentoring engineers to foster a culture of excellence. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, the Staff Data Engineer will design innovative solutions that align with the organization’s mission while driving strategic technical and architectural decisions. The Staff Data Engineer utilizes their skills to deliver technical outcomes that align with the direction of their team to further Life.Church’s mission and to reach people for Christ.

What You'll Do

  • Drive data awareness by delivering accurate, actionable insights to support analytics and decision-making.
  • Design and implement complex, reliable, and scalable data pipelines.
  • Support, maintain, and optimize existing ETL processes and data interfaces.
  • Collaborate with data and product teams to prioritize and deliver impactful data solutions.
  • Create clear documentation and diagrams to enhance understanding across teams and leadership.
  • Provide expert-level guidance on data modeling and warehouse design.
  • Partner with internal teams to establish and maintain excellence in data governance, privacy, and security.
  • Promote continuous learning, adoption of new technologies, and best practices in data engineering.
  • Advocate for rigorous testing and monitoring to ensure the delivery of trusted, high-quality data.
  • Champion data quality initiatives within the data team and across the organization.
  • Collaborate closely with the Data Architect to uphold organizational standards andmaintain best practices.
  • Enhance data knowledge by supporting and improving user event processing.
  • Mentor and develop junior and mid-level data engineers and contracting partners.
  • Actively lead within the agile/scrum development process.
  • Independently manage high-priority work while aligning with team goals.

Skills Needed to Succeed

  • Ability to self-motivate, make independent decisions, and solve problems with innovation.
  • Effective at multi-tasking and time management to meet strict deadlines while remaining flexible and open to change.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills to clearly explain complicated processes and foster partnerships.
  • Effective at process and organizational management to coordinate, structure, and provide vision to projects.
  • Strong leadership skills and understanding of developing and guiding others.
  • Expert-level SQL knowledge, capable of writing complex queries and performance tuning.
  • Deep knowledge in Database Management Systems, including Postgres, BigQuery, or MySQL.
  • Proficient in API and streaming data integration.
  • Deep knowledge of data warehousing models and design principles.
  • Familiar with user event data collection tools like Firebase, GA4, or similar platforms.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Data preferred.
  • 7+ years of related work experience.
  • Highly proficient in programming languages such as Python, Go, Java, or other general-purpose scripting languages.
  • Experienced with data orchestration tools like Airflow, FiveTran, DBT, Pub/Sub, or similar streaming technologies.
  • Experienced with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP), AWS, or Azure.
