GRAIL is seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer with deep expertise in Windows administration, VM pool management, systems integration, and compliance frameworks. In this role, you will design, implement, and maintain our Windows-based infrastructure—encompassing on-premises and cloud environments—while ensuring all processes and configurations meet rigorous regulatory standards. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to address any escalations, integrate new technologies, and optimize performance in a highly regulated setting.
This is a full time, onsite position working in the Research Triangle Park, NC lab.1st Shift Start Time: 9:00am EST - Monday to FridayWork on holidays/weekends may be requiredOn-call may be requiredWorking hours may be temporarily adjusted due to business demands, training, travel, and other events. 

Responsibilities:

  • Windows Infrastructure & VM Pool Management
  • Architect, deploy, and maintain Windows Server environments (2016/2019/2022) to ensure high availability and optimal performance.
  • Lead the design, provisioning, and lifecycle management of VM pools (VMware, or equivalent).
  • Develop and implement automation scripts (e.g., PowerShell, Python) for VM provisioning, configuration, and monitoring.
  • Systems Integration & Optimization
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (DevOps, Networking, Security) to integrate new applications and services.
  • Streamline data synchronization and ensure system compatibility between distributed platforms and tools.
  • Conduct root-cause analysis to resolve complex issues that impact performance and availability.
  • Compliance & Security
  • Champion compliance with relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g., SOX, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, ISO 27001) by defining and enforcing security policies.
  • Support the development and maintenance of documentation (SOPs, Work Instructions, validation protocols) for audits and regulatory reviews.
  • Coordinate with internal and external auditors to demonstrate adherence to industry best practices and internal controls.
  • Support the investigations in NCRs, CAPAs, and associated quality and technical investigations
  • Project Management & Process Improvement
  • Drive or participate in projects focusing on infrastructure upgrades, migrations, and scaling to meet business growth.
  • Identify areas for process automation, implementing solutions to reduce repetitive tasks and minimize downtime.
  • Mentor junior team members and spearhead knowledge-sharing initiatives to strengthen team proficiency.
  • Vendor & Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Work closely with external vendors to assess new technologies, negotiate service agreements, and ensure delivery against SLAs.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to evaluate organizational needs, propose solutions, and align system roadmaps with business objectives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field—or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in Windows system administration and VM pool management.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with Linux-based systems (e.g., Red Hat, Ubuntu, CentOS) in an enterprise environment, including installation, configuration, patch management, and performance tuning
  • Strong proficiency with Windows Server environments (installation, configuration, patching, troubleshooting).
  • Demonstrable expertise in virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V) and scripting (PowerShell, Python).
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP) and container technologies is a plus.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (IaC), and DevOps practices.
  • 3+ years experience with an Open Source code repository and collaborative software development platform (Gitlab)
  • Proven track record working under compliance regulations (SOX, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, ISO 27001) with the ability to maintain strict documentation and audit readiness.
  • Knowledge of security best practices, including vulnerability assessments, patch management, and incident response.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex technical topics to diverse audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving aptitude and a willingness to tackle new challenges.
  • Effective project management skills, including timeline definition, resource planning, and stakeholder communication.

  • Regularly required to stand, sit, walk, climb stairs/ladders, kneel, crouch, and wear safety gear.
  • Hours and days may vary depending on operational needs.
  • Working with dry ice may be necessary.
  • Standing or sitting for long periods of time may be necessary.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, blood specimens and instruments with moving parts, heating or freezing elements, and high speed centrifugation.
  • Must occasionally lift and / or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Travel may be required, up to 10% of the time.
The expected, full-time, annual base pay scale for this position is $114,000 - $143,000.  Actual base pay will consider skills, experience, and location.
Based on the role, colleagues may be eligible to participate in an annual bonus plan tied to company and individual performance, or an incentive plan. We also offer a long-term incentive plan to align company and colleague success over time.
