We are looking for an enthusiastic person to work in the Lumentum Optical Alignment and Process Analytics R&D group to contribute to the manufacturing process development of our optical switch products. Optical Alignment Process development is inherently multidisciplinary, involving optics, MEMS, hermetics, micro-optics assembly and electronics. The Lumentum optical switches incorporate cutting edge technology that is central to a significant portion of the world’s internet traffic and data management systems.

                                                                          

This is an excellent opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary environment and to learn about the product development process at Lumentum.  In this position, the new team member will contribute to the development of processes relating to the advancement of Optical Alignment Automation and robotics, as well as the Process Analytics tools to assess and improve the automation.

New team members will be mentored by experienced engineers to develop the processes, associated hardware, and software to enable targeted alignment processes and improvements.  As system integrators, team members are required to collaborate with the Alignment Automation, Optical Design, Mechanical Design, Electrical Design, Manufacturing Engineering, and Automation Software Development teams.

Roles and Expectations:

  • Use configuration tools to enable Lumentum’s optical alignment automation platform and manufacturing data management systems.
  • Advance the alignment platform and processes with peer support from the software development teams.
  • Debug and field-test code and processes with manufacturing engineers, end-users and other developers.
  • Author, review, and release documentation
  • Plan and execute process development experiments.
  • Provide regular progress reports to multi-disciplinary team.
  • Use and improve analysis algorithms to characterize test performance.

Recommended Education:         

  • BSc or MSc in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Engineering Physics, or similar Engineering and Science discipline.

Required Skills:                 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Highly motivated and energetic
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Team player who can also work autonomously
  • Open to receiving and providing constructive criticism in peer reviews
  • Software development and release management capability in Python.

Practical experience with any of the following would be considered a strong asset:                      

  • affixing and detaching components with adhesives
  • machine vision processes, hardware, and software
  • robotic gripper processes, hardware, and software
  • systems requirements and architecture definition (any domain)
  • tools to query, analyze and present data, such as Excel Pivots and Charts, JMP, Minitab
  • capability in .NET software development or similar.
