Business Data Manager

Cooley is seeking a Business Data Manager to join the Data Management team.

Position summary:  The Business Data Manager is responsible for ensuring that data platform owners, attorneys, and business professionals have optimal access to current and enhanced business, people, matter, and relationship information. This role involves identifying and evaluating external data sources, monitoring market trends, and collaborating with practice groups and data owners to identify data and concept gaps. The role also includes creating mapping schemas to align external data sources with internal data/taxonomies and maintaining data classification tagging accuracy.

Other key functions of this role are to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of data across the organization by enforcing data stewardship best practices across different systems and collaborate with data owners, data stewards, and other teams to ensure data meets organizational needs and quality standards. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Position responsibilities: 

Data exploration:

  • External Data Mining: Identify and evaluate external data sources (APIs, data feeds, and unstructured datasets) to effectively supplement and enhance key internal data assets
  • Market Monitoring: Monitor market trends and collaborate with practice groups, Competitive and Legal Intelligence, and other business professional teams to determine needs for new data sources
  • Software Utilization: Assist in selecting and utilizing specialized software tools for data and ontology and taxonomy management, ensuring they meet the firm’s requirements

Data mapping:

  • Mapping: Establish mapping schemas to align data components of external sources with internal data and taxonomies

Business data quality and enhancement:

  • Data Quality Management: Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of data across the organization
  • Policy Enforcement: Implement and enforce data stewardship best practices across different platforms
  • De-duplication: Ensure de-duping of records as needed and managing data accuracy and currency in select enterprise applications
  • Data Projects: Identify and resolve data gaps, as needed
  • Vendors: Data remediation vendor management
  • Data Synchronization: Ensure Salesforce account records are synchronized appropriately with Pitchbook, Capital IQ, Equilar, and other applicable company data integrations. Manage and resolve incorrectly synchronized accounts
  • Data Definitions: Collaborate with Data Governance team on data definitional work required to encompass the business enhancement concepts necessary
  • Data Tagging and Collections:
  • Utilize Pitchbook, Capital IQ and other external and internal data sources to tag business entity records by attributes required by the business, including business type, status, relationship, industry, etc.
  • Utilize Introhive, Equilar, and other external and internal data sources to tag people records by attributes required by the business, including role, function, and relationship.
  • Create processes to screen inaccurately or inadequately tagged records

Stakeholder engagement:

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Foster strong relationships with key stakeholders across various departments to ensure external data requirements are understood and data enhancement and stewardship efforts are handled effectively in appropriate enterprise systems and environments

Performance monitoring and reporting:

  • Metrics Development: Develop metrics to monitor the effectiveness of data enhancement initiatives and team workload
  • Data Quality: 
  • Design and implement data validation and verification procedures to ensure data accuracy and reliability
  • Document data enhancement and stewardship business processes
  • Undertake root cause analysis of data discrepancies and proactively resolve data issues
  • Reporting and Analysis: Create reports to consolidate and uncover relevant data for classification and cleansing tasks
  • Roadmap: Collaborate with the Data Science and Engineering team to identify and leverage opportunities to automate data enhancement and data stewardship functions

Management:

  • Serve as direct supervisor and mentor to direct reports
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of direct reports, ensure compliance with assigned work hours and monitor for compliance with all firm and department policies. Manage staffing coverage, review and process time logs/time off requests
  • Support business professional development and continued educational opportunities
  • In collaboration with immediate supervisor and CN HR, participate in hiring, performance appraisals, counseling, termination and other employee lifecycle events
  • All other duties as assigned or required

Skills and experience:

Required:

  • After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applications
  • Ability to work extended and/or weekend hours, as required
  • Ability to travel, as required
  • 5+ years’ experience in law firm research, data quality management or related discipline
  • Senior candidates must have 7+ years applicable experience in the field with 2+ years of exempt/management experience in relevant roles
  • In depth understanding of data management principles
  • Strong project management skills

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Information Management, Data Science, Computer Science or associated discipline
  • Experience working in a law firm or legal environment
  • Ability to analyze complex data and develop actionable insights

Cooley offers a competitive compensation and excellent benefits package and is committed to fair and equitable employment practices.

The expected annual pay range for this position with a full-time schedule is $115,000 - $155,000. Please note that final offer amount will be dependent on geographic location, applicable experience and skillset of the candidate. Senior level candidates may be considered for this position and would be eligible for a higher salary range based on experience.
