Overview:

As an Atmospheric Data Analyst, the candidate will maintain archives of terrestrial and planetary data acquired by the Terrestrial and Planetary Environments (T&PE) Team of the Natural Environments Branch, located at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The development/deployment platforms are Windows, Mac, and Linux-based and Python is the primary programming language involved. An important part of the T&PE’s mission is to provide robust analyses of terrestrial environment parameters for the design and operation of space vehicles using climatologies. Therefore, the candidate will help maintain/develop tools used to archive and quality control (QC) meteorological data received from launch sites. The candidate will also ensure that data from the launch sites are available for day-of-launch (DOL) applications, perform system administrative tasks on virtual machines and data servers, and conduct analyses of the terrestrial environment as needed.

Duties will include the following:

  • Developing and maintaining programs, scripts, and tools used to archive meteorological data received from launch sites.
  • Maintaining data flow on virtual machines and a local data server.
  • Advancing QC methods implemented on meteorological data that are received.
  • Serving in roles that provide DOL situational awareness and/or meteorological data to be uploaded to the vehicle.
  • Performing analyses of terrestrial environment data, as needed.
  • Presenting results to the NASA customer and at conferences.
  • Publishing results in appropriate journals.
 

Here's What You'll Need:

 

Must have received a Master of Science degree in Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, or similar field from an ABET accredited institution, or a Bachelor of Science degree with 1-3 years’ relevant experience. 

Must have experience with:

  • Object-oriented programming, along with Python.
  • Processing large datasets continuously.
  • Data quality assurance.
  • Accessing data stored remotely via APIs, virtual machines, and multiple data servers.
  • Linux operating systems (Debian/Ubuntu preferred).

The successful candidate also must:

  • Exhibit strong technical writing and presentation skills to present data to internal and external customers.
  • Have strong customer relations skills.
  • Possess the ability to multi-task and transition between quick turnaround assignments.
  • Show initiative and be proactive to make connections and build relationships with key players on the tasks.
  • Demonstrate the capability to plan and perform analyses independently and as a team.

It is desired for the candidate to have experience with:

  • Machine learning capabilities.
  • Familiarity with meteorological data.

Essential Functions

Work Environment: 

Office environment at MSFC in Huntsville, Alabama. The applicant should expect to work on-site five (5) days per week and is thus expected to live in or near Huntsville, Alabama. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). 

Physical Requirements: 

Sitting for extended periods at a desk to develop tools, write reports, and perform engineering tasks (65%). Sitting for extended periods in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (20%). Using stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and other facilities (10%). Traveling to other US government facilities and to conferences (5%).

Equipment and Machines: 

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance: 

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions: 

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
