Position Summary

The western intermountain population of SNPL are believed to be in decline as documented breeding pairs at Great Salt Lake (one of two most important breeding areas in North America) has plummeted in recent years. Audubon Rockies and Saline Lakes of National Audubon Society, and Tracy Aviary initiated a pilot breeding SNPL monitoring project during the summer of 2023. Ultimately, this research is intended to drive co-creation of conservation actions by science and community.

The Snowy Plover (SNPL) Monitoring Project Imagery Data Analysis Intern will work closely with SNPL Monitoring Project Lead to analyze still captures and video from the 2024 survey season nest cameras. Each nest that was discovered at two study locations had trail cameras installed within a day of being discovered and imagery was collected for the remaining gestation period or until the nest failed. Analysis includes documentation of adult incubation behavior, number of eggs, any human or predator disturbances, egg hatch, number of hatchlings, and timestamps of all occurrences and when the nest is vacated. Candidate will assist SNPL Lead with data analysis, QAQC, and data management. Intern may assist with simple statistical summary analysis and graphics preparation.

The position is part-time hourly at $15 per hour for a maximum of 12 weeks, with a maximum of 27 hours per week.

$15.00 / hour

Essential Functions

  • Analyzing and quantifying image captures of nest activity during the incubation period including time stamps of active incubation and adult switches, adult alarm and defense behaviors, disturbance by humans, predators and other animals, hatching, chick counts, other behaviors of adults and chicks.

  • Candidate will also review samples of previously processed imagery for QAQC.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A qualified applicant will have excellent communication skills, familiarity with SNPL habitat and nesting behavior.

  • Candidate will have technical capacity to search imagery and video with online access to database.

  • Candidate will also have good data management skills and be able to assist with or independently conduct basic data queries and statistical analysis.
