Department Summary
Roche Sequencing Solutions (Santa Clara) is a group at Roche developing nanopore based sequencing dedicated to making clinical genetic testing easy and affordable. We are developing a revolutionary, single-molecule DNA sequencer that will improve the lives of people in a wide variety of ways including timely screening for diseases and diagnosis of various cancers.
Roche is looking for a motivated and team-oriented individual who is passionate about revolutionary sequencing technology. The System Engineer Intern will become an expert on the operation, theory, and data analysis of the Roche Nanopore Sequencing platform. Following Roche product development processes, they will help take the instrument, microfluidic device and software from an advanced proof of concept to an operational laboratory system. Drawing on experience in engineering, computer science, biochemistry and/or materials science, the System Engineer Intern will design and implement experiments on the Roche sequencer and will help monitor, diagnose, improve, and analyze microfluidic devices, instrument and reagent interfaces, and processes. The candidate will analyze and present experimental and data exploration results around spatial and temporal variability and robustness of the microfluidic devices and the system, and work collaboratively across microfluidic sensor device, instrument, reagents, and system teams. The candidate must be self-motivated, details-oriented, and able to work well in a team.

The Opportunity
Become an expert on the operation of the Roche Sequencing Platform
Design, implement, and analyze single-molecule sequencing results of various microfluidic device process changes and various operating parameters
Investigate, troubleshoot, and perform microfluidic sensor device development in a fast-paced environment
Manipulate large data sets and apply data science, statistical methods, and/or process control monitoring techniques
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

Who You Are (Required)
Required Education - You meet one of the following criteria:
Must be pursuing or have attained an Associate's Degree.
Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).
Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program).
Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).
Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student).
Required Majors: engineering - biological, chemical, materials, mechanical; statistics, biochemistry, chemistry, or any related field.
Required Skills:
The ability to perform statistical analysis of data with programs such as JMP, Matlab, R. and are familiar with computer programming in languages such as or Python OR
Meticulous attention to detail and excellent written and electronic record keeping skills
Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills, along with experimental design experience
Strong oral and written communication skills
Self-motivated and able to work well in a team
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

Prefer experience with statistical data analysis using JMP, python or
Prefer understanding of or experience with microfluidics, sequencing methodologies, or other wet laboratory instrumentation

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $45.00-$50.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
