The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang Technological University seeks a Research Fellow to conduct interdisciplinary research towards providing a holistic understanding of tectonics, volcanoes, and the linkages between them, with a focus on the Southeast Asian Ring of Fire. We are particularly interested in candidates with a background in numerical and/or analytical modeling of tectonic and volcanic processes.

The candidate will work under the supervision of Prof Emma Hill and will collaborate with researchers from across the ‘Integrating Volcano and Earthquake Science and Technology (InVEST) in Southeast Asia’ project, a 5-year project that aims to provide a holistic understanding of regional tectonics, volcanoes, the linkages between the two, and their cascading hazards and impacts in Singapore and Southeast Asia (https://earthobservatory.sg/research/tectonics/geodesy-group/integrating-volcano-and-earthquake-science-and-technology-in-southeast-asia).

The successful candidate will help to identify and study links between the eight components of InVEST, which together investigate the geohazards of this region from a range of perspectives We’re looking for a collaborative individual with a passion for learning, who would enjoy working with people from a wide range of disciplines – including seismology, geodesy, geology, remote sensing, tectonics, volcanoes, risk, social science and history -- with a goal to connecting the dots between the components.

Key Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities may (depending on the expertise of the successful candidate) include:

  • Numerical and/or analytical modeling of tectonics, volcanoes, earthquake processes and/or cascading hazards towards holistic understanding of geohazards around Southeast Asia

  • Exploration of large geophysical, geological, remote-sensing and historical databases to study earthquake and volcano processes around Southeast Asia

  • Investigation of interdisciplinary linkages across tectonics, volcanoes, cascading hazards and societal risk

  • Development of innovative new modeling tools designed for the analysis of geohazards in Southeast Asia

  • Organisation of collaborative activities across the InVEST interdisciplinary components (e.g., organization of research discussions, workshops, and brown-bag lunches)

Job Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Earth science, geophysics, geodesy, natural hazards, computational modelling, data analytics, statistics, or a related field, plus at least 4 years of relevant post-doctoral experience.

  • Demonstrated expertise in numerical modeling to study tectonic and/or volcano deformation and/or earthquake processes

  • Strong expertise in programming with Python, MATLAB or R and experience with high performance computing systems.

  • Strong track record of publishing research relevant to the position in Tier 1 journals

  • Evidence of excellent communication skills, including scientific writing

  • Evidence of independence in research direction and team spirit

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) is a University Research Institute at NTU with a mission to conduct fundamental research on earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, and climate change in and around Southeast Asia, towards safer and more sustainable societies. For more information on EOS, please visit http://www.earthobservatory.sg.

EOS maintains a regional network of geophysical observation stations in collaboration with neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia, that are supported by the EOS Centre for Geohazard Observations, as well as a Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS). Computational resources are available through a dedicated cluster and collaboration with the High-Performance Computing Centre of NTU. In addition, EOS hosts state-of-the-art analytical facilities for petrological and geochemical analysis, and a Community Engagement office that co-creates learning opportunities for a range of audiences to promote a safer and more sustainable future.

EOS seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.

Interested applicants should include a CV, research statement, list of publications, and the names of three potential referees. We regret to inform that only shortlisted candidate will be notified.
